Paul Smith for War Child

According to Fashion news source Vogue.co.uk, this year's London fashion week gathered much applause, amongst which, the very notable appearance of famous British fashion designer Paul Smith presenting a specially designed T-shirt dedicated to the War Child children's charity. The fantastic T-shirt, together with the release of the charity music album 'War Child Heroes' with the cover designed by John Squire, have both been recently put for sale by Paul Smith's jeans division, 100% of profits being donated to the charity fund. The T-shirts are available at Paul Smith Jeans shops and online at paulsmith.co.uk, priced at £50.

"I am very honoured to be involved in this worthy project," says Smith. "I have designed a T-shirt which has more of a street/jeans feeling which I feel fits in with this project - I hope people like it."

The Twist on Burberry

The New Year is in with its ups, downs, new trends and sales and we're all looking for something original, fun and attractive to welcome January and the coming cold months ahead. This month's fashion twist is on British designer label Burberry, who have been dressing men and women with elegance and refinement since the mid-1800's...

Founded in 1856 when 21 year old Thomas Burberry, a former apprentice to a country draper, opened an outfiters shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England, Burberry's business began to thrive and by 1870, gradually became known as a fashion "Empire" with an increased focus on the development of outdoor wear for the use of local residents and visiting sportsmen who avidly frequented the shop for their everyday garments.

Towards the end of the 19th century, Thomas Burberry then invented the now famous 'gabardine', a breatheable fabric made using an innovative process where the yarn was waterproofed prior to weaving. This fabric was not only water-resistant but also extremely durable. Some more innovative clothing by Burberry includes the officer's Tielocken Coat, which was the forerunner to today's famous trench coat.

In the 1900's Burberry was also responsible for designing clothes for important people in history such as Amundsen when he became the first man to reach the South Pole on December 14, 1911 who left a Burberry gabardine tent to inform Captain Scott of his very successful mission. After Amundsen reached the South Pole, Ernest Shackleton was very determined to be the first explorer to cross the Antarctic continent from coast to coast. He too was outfitted by Burberry in his 1914 expedition.

Burberry also designed many garments for aviators in the 1930s.

Burberry is also famous for its Burberry Check which registered as a trademark and was introduced as a lining to the trenchcoat in 1924. Soon the red, camel, black and white check became synonymous with the brand name of Burberry.

After being awarded the Royal Warrant from Her Majesty the Queen of England in 1955, the Burberry Check design began to apply itself to umbrellas, luggage, scarves, jewellery and other fashion items.

Designer clothing featured in Burberry Pro's latest spring-summer 2009 collections included flowy fabrics and some faded rain-soaked colours, teamed up with some chunky wooden accessories.
